Why Birth Photography?

October 21, 2013  •  1 Comment

Ten years ago, if you had told me I should hire a birth photographer when it came time for me to have children, I would’ve looked at you like you were out of your mind. Photography? Of that?! No. Way.

Then, one of the most transformational, life changing, indescribably important events of my life occurred: my son was born. I love to tell his birth story - the nonchalant onset of labor, my husband’s heroic support, my midwife drenched in water. The crisis moment when things seemed to be going impossibly awry, the moment everything turned around, the effort and work, and that glorious moment of reward, when my precious son breathed his first breath earthside. When I tell it, and even as I write about it here, I see it all over again in my mind’s eye. And I wish you could too.  Unfortunately, all I have is a hastily snapped cell phone photo of my husband holding my freshly born son:

I’ve since had two more babies, and am thankful that I chose to have a photographer document both births. Several years later, I still go back and relive those moments. The birth of a child is a once in a lifetime moment. It’s the moment a woman becomes a mother, a couple becomes a family, an only child becomes the big brother or sister. There is only one first breath, only one first look, only one first moment together. It is worth investing in capturing those moments in high quality, beautifully shot photos.

Come back later this week, I’ll be posting more about the benefits of birth photography!
